Take Care of Your Penis: What You Should (and Shouldn’t Do) to Take Care of #1
It goes without saying that for guys like us our penis, our #1, is a key part of our overall well-being, confidence, and sexual health.
Dr. Perito also recently provided tips like these including favs like “how to your wash your nuts” in a recent Instagram post that we’ve expounded upon below.
Taking care of such an important piece of equipment properly ensures longevity and helps avoid discomfort, infections, or long-term health issues.
Let’s dive into what you should and shouldn’t do to take care of your penis in order to maintain excellent penis health!
Keep It Clean – But Be Gentle!
One of the most important habits you can develop is good hygiene. Daily washing is crucial, but it’s not just about rinsing off—it’s about doing it right. Use mild, unscented soap and warm water to gently cleanse the entire area, including under the foreskin if you’re uncircumcised. Avoid harsh soaps or scrubbing too aggressively, as this can lead to irritation, dryness, or even micro-cuts, making infections more likely.
After washing, dry thoroughly—especially in folds or creases. Leaving moisture behind can lead to bacterial growth, which can cause unpleasant smells or infections. A simple, gentle patting dry with a soft towel is enough to keep you fresh and clean.
Choose Your Underwear Wisely
What you wear down there matters. Tight, synthetic fabrics can trap moisture and cause friction, leading to chafing or even infections. After all, you don’t want sandpaper “down there.”
Wear breathable fabrics like cotton or newer materials like MicroModal (3 times softer than cotton), that allow airflow and reduce moisture buildup. Shinesty’s Ball Hammock Pouch underwear is a wonderful example of new underwear tech. This underwear leverages MicroModal, a luxurious, eco-friendly fabric made from beech trees, similar to linen and silk, but much easier to care for and will keep you cool and comfortable all day.
Investing in these small changes to your underwear brand can make a big difference in your overall comfort and hygiene.
Stay Vigilant – Conduct Regular Self-Exams
Just like the rest of your body, your penis can signal when something is “off.” Make it a habit to perform regular self-exams to check for any unusual changes like bumps, lumps, or changes in shape, size, or color.
This doesn’t take long, but it could help catch early signs of infections, STDs, or other medical conditions. If you notice anything unusual, don’t hesitate to seek professional advice by contacting urologists and penile specialists here at The Perito Clinic.
Stay Hydrated and Eat for Your Health
Your diet and hydration levels affect more than just your energy or skin—they impact your sexual health too. Drinking plenty of water (8 cups a day if possible) helps ensure proper blood flow and keeps everything functioning smoothly. It makes your skin look better overall, too!
A balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients is especially important as it supports hormonal balance and overall wellness. Aim to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to give your body, including your penis, the fuel it needs to perform. We have a blog post introducing the concept of “The Erection Diet” if you want to learn more about what to eat for optimum penile health and better erections.
Use It or Lose It – But Don’t Be Too Rough
Sexual activity and regular erections are important for penile health as they keep the tissues oxygenated and flexible.
But being too rough during sex or masturbation can damage the tissue. Overly aggressive handling, especially without enough lubrication, can lead to microtears, swelling, and even permanent scarring over time. Scarring in the penile tissue can lead to Peyronie’s Disease, which can cause an abnormal, and often painful, curvature in the penis.
Studies also show that it’s important to ejaculate at least a couple of times a week, especially if you are older, to maintain prostate health and to help avoid prostate cancer. A Harvard health
Study found men who ejaculated 21 or more times a month had a 31% lower risk of prostate cancer than those who did the same 4-7 times per month.
Be mindful of your body’s limits, and don’t rush things. If you’re using toys or your hands, be sure you’re using a safe amount of lubrication to reduce friction and prevent injury.
The Bottom Line: Penile Hygiene Equals Confidence
